We first installed OpenSearch for #111 for Mastodon full-text search. However, I'm the only one who really uses it and plus, I can just use the database to search for messages although it's slightly less user-friendly. The main reasons I'd like to get rid of OpenSearch:

  • It has quite a few Java dependencies (like the dreaded log4j)

  • Its security is kind of problematic #112

  • It uses a ton of resources: it adds 4 extra seconds to our boot time, uses 600 MB of RAM, and spawns about 60 processes. That's pretty bloated for a search feature that I use once every few weeks.

If you all have any other comments, please post them below! If not, I will uninstall OpenSearch by tomorrow.
