If you try to switch to the root user with su or use kdesu to run an app as root, it now fails with the error Authentication failure. Using su to switch to any other user still works normally.

Turns it out was a misconfigured /etc/pam.d/su. Redid the configuration according to the ArchWiki and this is fixed now.
