9 Virtual machines

You can run virtual machines (VMs) on exozyme using the QEMU/KVM hypervisor. However, we recommend using containers whenever possible since they are much more lightweight than VMs, and hey, you can even install a desktop environment inside the container!

To get started, use the web UI in exoportal. Make sure you select "User session" connection when creating a VM. The UI has a list of OSes that it can download and install automatically, or you can provide your own ISO installation image.

Alternatively, you can use the Virtual Machine Manager app in a remote desktop session. The default connection requires root permissions to connect to, so you can close any password prompts and delete that connection. Now click on File > Add Connection and select the QEMU/KVM user session hypervisor. You can create a new VM by clicking on the icon in the top left corner of the Virtual Machine Manager app. You will also need to download an ISO installation image for the OS that you would like to install.

Please don't give your VM a lot of RAM since the server's RAM is limited. 2GB should be enough in most cases. Once you finish setting up the VM, remember to delete the ISO image to free up disk space. Enjoy your new VM!
