I Don't Like Musical Instruments 2023-02-19T22:17:29Z true Why I enjoy music while simultaneously disliking playing musical instruments post

life

Learning a musical instrument is like writing a ray tracer. You've seen all these people's cool fancy amazing ray tracers, and you're like, yeah, that doesn't look too bad. And then six months later you're drowning in the most bizarre template<class _VkMemoryIterator> void std::set<_Key, _InsanityFunc, _Alloc>::insert(_VkMemoryIterator, _VkMemoryIterator) [with _Key = satan_t; _Compare = std::less<satan_t>; _Alloc = std::allocator<satan_t>] errors and your friend asks you how it's going and you nod and smile but secretly deep down your heart segfaults. And finally, six years later, after you've dropped out of college just to work on your ray tracer, it fibally compiles and you have the greatest Mountain Dew-amplified feeling of triumph and victory as you have achieved total mastery over your ray tracer.

This is why I don't like playing a musical instrument.

Now you're probably going to start victim-blaming me and complaining that I don't have the willpower and mental strength to survive hundreds of hours or scales and practicing the same piece a million times. Now let me ask you this: if I came up to you and asked if you would rather play a scale infinity times on a musucal instrument or dress up in a ridiculous IHOP mascot waffle costume for 86 years, you'd probably choose the waffle thing. I meant pancakes. Whatever.

Now this isn't to say I don't like music. Actually, it's the complete opposite. I'd always choose music over dressing up as a waffle for 86 years. Always.

But you know what's even worse? Composing music 100 years ago.
