If you haven't tried CoCalc yet, it's awesome. However, free accounts are severely limited, such as having no internet access—unless you host CoCalc yourself!

We are using a Podman container to host our CoCalc instance at calc.exozy.me. You can create an account by asking for a secret token on our Matrix.

    Other changes:

    • Improve uptime #44: We're working to have fewer outages and improve our reliability. Stay tuned on this.

    • Sell old CPU #25: We were able to easily sell our old CPU on eBay, so that's one less thing to worry about.

    • Fix issues with Code - OSS #36: If you're a fan of the VSCode editor, we've finally fixed a number of issues with it by compiling a newer version than the one available in the officail Arch Linux repositories.

Hopefully we'll reach v3.0 soon, when RAM prices go down and we can finally upgrade our memory.

This is one of those releases that might not have a lot of improvements from a user's perspective, but tons of things were fixed and improved!

    • exochat maintainence: We've cleaned up the exochat database and are in the process of re-bridging all the rooms bridged to Discord. For public rooms, we're going to be using the t2bot since it's more reliable and has a lower maintainence cost.

    • More exomedia albums: We added a few more albums to exomedia. Go and check them out!

    • Disk backup #42: You now no longer have to worry about losing your data if our disk dies. We've got you covered.

    • Remote desktop compatibility table: Check out our compatibility table on our wiki to see if your favorite applications will work in a remote desktop session. Don't forget to contribute if an application you use is not in the table.

    • exocalc: Check out our exocalc, a powerful collaborative online IDE. You can even run graphical apps with it! Note that you cannot sign in with your normal exozyme account and must create an account on exocalc to use it. Ask on Matrix for an account creation secret token.

    Lots of fixes Stable

    a released this 2021-08-24 01:58:01 +00:00 | 37 commits to main since this release

    Lots of fixes this time!

    • New wiki pages: We're in the process of migrating a lot of content originally written for the quickstart guide to the wiki. Don't forget to contribute to our wiki!

    • Fixed a major bug with KDE Wallet and GNOME Keyring #30: It turns out this issue was actually caused by D-Bus and our xrdp startup script. Only took a few weeks to track down and fix!

    • Fixed another bug with Baloo #41: Check out this issue, since it's pretty crazy.

    • Software upgrades: We've upgraded matrix-synapse to 1.40.0, KDE Plasma to 5.22.5, KDE Gear to 21.08.1, Chromium to 93.0 and more.

This is another relatively small release, but there are a few important improvements:

    • exodesk background contest #37: Submit and vote on images to our background contest! We need something better than the default plain exodesk login background!

    • One more hour of uptime #15: Since for now we won't be running the server the whole day, we're going to instead extend our uptime an hour more. The server now boots at 7:00 CST in the morning and shuts down automatically at 23:00, for a total of 16 hours of uptime.

    • More swap memory #26: We expanded our zram swap memory from 4 GB to 16 GB so you shouldn't have to worry about running out of memory anymore!

    • Email integration #40: We set up a SendGrid account for sending out emails for exozyme services such as exocial. There's a limit of 100 emails per day, so we probably won't use it much.

What a big release for v2.0: we now have twice as many CPU cores!

    • New CPU #25: We've upgraded our Ryzen 5600X to a 5900X and bought a decent CPU cooler. Enjoy our 24 threads!

    • exodesk web client #34: Now you no longer need to install a remote desktop client app (you still can). Just go to https://desk.exozy.me/ and log in with your exozyme username and password.

    • Wiki #17 #28 #35: We now have a wiki that's actually maintained! We're using exogit's built-in wiki feature for simplicity.

    • Wake-on-LAN #36: After a series of outages over the past few days, we have a plan! If the server shuts down, we should be able to wake it up using Wake-on-LAN. Hopefully we won't actually need to use it...

    • Website updates: As always, our website was updated to reflect this new release. You can now send an email to join@exozy.me to register for exozyme and the quickstart guide was heavily refactored to make it simpler, moving much of the more advanced content to our wiki.

That's it for this release. We're looking forward to v3.0!

    A fairly sizeable release:

    • Onion service: Of course, the big change this release is that we are now mirroring our website on the dark web as an Onion service! Point your Tor browser (there's one on the exozyme server if you need it) to qal6mygptf757jiv46m6x2g23v3dyxgrrrv3dbxpiyjj44tsd2u3l3yd.onion and enjoy!

    • Use zram instead of swap file: This is one of the more technical changes, but all that this does is when we are running out of memory, it compresses the RAM instead of moving the contents to a swap file. This is actually faster since disk I/O operations are quite slow compared to RAM, and the compression ratio can be up to five times, so this is effectively brings our total RAM up to 80GB... kind of.

    • Clean out drive: We cleaned out our NVME hard drive, so now it's only 46% full! Well, it'll start filling up again soon, but there's currently plenty of room for storing your files.

    • Passwords: We're still trying to get everyone to change their passwords from the default, but in the meantime, we now generate a random password for each user. Security matters!

    • Discontinue exowiki: Due to the high maintainence costs, we are discontinuing exowiki and switching to using exogit's built-in wiki instead. If you don't have access, contact me and I'll fix it.

    • CPU upgrade: Just bought a Ryzen 5900X today for $400 so that should be shipping to us soon.

I'm looking forward to the release of exozyme v2.0 in the next few weeks!

This is a relatively small release, but we're continuing to make progress before v2.0. Here are some of the improvements:

    • Bug tracker: Several issues received fixes on our bug tracker and a few new ones were added. Keep on hunting down those bugs!

    • Two more hours of uptime: The exozyme server now autostarts at 7:30 CST instead of 9:30. Get started early in the morning!

    • Website improvments: As always, our website keeps on getting better. The quickstart quide and explore pages received some expansions and cleanup.

    • Remote desktop performance: After troubleshooting this for a while, we've determined that 16-bit color and resizing the remote desktop window to be smaller help a lot with performance. Gaming is still pretty tricky to do over remote desktop, especially with its high latency, but it should be much better now.

    • Software upgrades: We added a few more programming languages like Haskell, OCaml, and Kotlin. Git, Firefox, Blender, and the Linux kernel also received updates. To ensure stability, from now on we will only install updates on Friday nights.

Thanks for reading and help out with some of our issues! Let's get to v2.0 soon!

Wow, a lot has happened since our last release. Here are some highlights:

    • Status page: We now have a better status page, powered by Upptime. We aren't hosting it ourselves because that kind of defeats the point of a status page when exozyme goes down.

    • Website improvements: More website improvements again! This time our quickstart guide received some more tweaks to be more beginner-friendly and add some tips for improving slow remote desktop connections. We still need a lot of help with this!

    • Bug tracker: Lots of new issues and fixes on our bug tracker. I also moved some things like our roadmap to the bug tracker. Go help out and vote on issues!

    • New transparent logo: Just a minor tweak, but it makes things look way better in dark mode. We're also in the process of moving over some stuff to this repo to complete the transition from GitHub to exogit.

    • Passwords: We're trying to improve our password policy in #21, so remember to first change your password from the default to something else with passwd. More updates on this later!

It looks like there'll be an exciting future for exozyme!

exozyme is finally at the point where we can consider it to be stable. Since our v0.3-beta release, a lot has happened:

    • LDAP user management: Completing the transition over the LDAP with some scripts for user management. Overall, we've definitely benefitted from the simpler protocol compared to Keycloak and much lower resource usage.

    • Security fixes: Fix a number of security issues such as #2, #4, #6, and #10. All even numbers... strange.

    • Users: We now have 9 users! (Not counting root and nobody of course)

    • exogit transition: Moved all our repositories from GitHub to exogit.

    • Renaming: Renamed our web services to all begin with "exo".

    • Website improvements: Rework the website and quickstart guide to be more accessible to beginners.

Thanks for using exozyme and supporting us up to this important release!
